Celestron has revolutionised the manual telescope with StarSense Explorer, a groundbreaking device that utilises your smartphone to analyse the night sky and instantly calculate its precise position. This innovative technology is particularly well-suited for beginners, offering a user-friendly app interface accompanied by detailed tutorials. StarSense Explorer essentially acts as a personal tour guide, making the exploration of the night sky an accessible and enjoyable experience for individuals new to astronomy.

Dock, Launch, Explore

StarSense Explorer eliminates the need for complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts. Finding celestial objects has never been more straightforward, faster, or accurate. In just a matter of minutes after setting up the telescope, you can confidently navigate the night sky.

By placing your phone in the unique StarSense dock and launching the StarSense Explorer app, the process becomes seamless. After aligning your phone with the telescope's optics through a quick 2-minute procedure, the app generates a list of currently visible celestial objects. Simply choose an object, and on-screen arrows guide you in adjusting the telescope. Once the object is ready to view, the bullseye turns green, indicating that you're ready to explore the wonders of the night sky.

Smartphone Compatibility

StarSense Explorer is compatible with a wide range of modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and newer models, as well as most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later that have been manufactured since 2016. For a comprehensive list of compatible devices, you can refer to the official compatibility list by clicking here.

Patented StarSense Sky Recognition Technology

StarSense Explorer utilises patented technology along with your smartphone to precisely determine the telescope's orientation in the night sky. It employs a Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), akin to the algorithms used by satellites in orbit to correctly orient themselves. The app leverages LISA to match star patterns detected overhead with its internal database.

In contrast to other astronomy apps that primarily rely on the phone's gyros and accelerometers, which may not be as accurate, StarSense Explorer's LISA technology provides superior precision. This innovative approach ensures that the app can accurately inform you when your desired target is visible in the eyepiece, setting it apart from other apps in terms of reliability and functionality.

Sturdy Altazimuth Mount

The StarSense Explorer LT features a straightforward altazimuth mount that simplifies the process of adjusting the telescope to locate your desired target. The mount includes an altitude slow-motion adjustment with a sliding rod, allowing you to precisely fine-tune the telescope's pointing position and seamlessly track targets as they appear to drift across the night sky. The entire setup is supported by an adjustable, full-height tripod, providing stability and flexibility for your observational needs.

Dazzling Views with High Quality Optics

With its substantial 127mm (5”) objective lens, this telescope possesses ample light-gathering capacity to reveal intricate details in celestial objects. Anticipate crisp and bright views of Jupiter, showcasing its four Galilean moons, prominent cloud bands, and the Great Red Spot. The rings of Saturn, the trapezium in the Orion Nebula, and the stunning Pleiades Open Star Cluster are also among the celestial wonders that can be observed with clarity and detail through this telescope.

Perfect for the City or Dark Sky Sites

Even in light-polluted city locations, StarSense Explorer is sophisticated enough to identify prominent celestial objects such as Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Orion Nebula, double stars, and other well-known entities. If the telescope is brought to a slightly darker location, additional celestial objects become visible.

With the 5” Newtonian telescope and relatively dark skies, you can easily observe objects like the Andromeda Galaxy, Hercules Open Star Cluster, and many more. The entire telescope kit weighs just 11.4 pounds, making it highly portable and convenient for your next camping trip or a visit to a remote observing site.

Solar Warning
  • Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result.
  • Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it.
  • Never leave your optic unsupervised. Make sure an adult who is familiar with the correct operating procedures is with your optic at all times, especially when children are present.
