Altair Starwave 80ED-R ED Doublet Refractor Telescope

The Starwave 80ED-R is an updated and refined version of the original Starwave 80ED. It features improved optics with an S-FPL53-based doublet objective lens for superior colour correction. The telescope comes with a lighter and more compact tube, equipped with a "Rack and Pinion" geared focuser.

The now standard 2.5" Rack 'n Pinion focuser provides full tension-adjustment, accommodating heavy loads such as large eyepieces, CCD, or DSLR cameras.

The ED Doublet design excels in colour correction while maintaining a compact optical tube suitable for easy transport, distinguishing it from Achromat refractors. The new S-FPL53 ED Doublet lens enhances colour correction in the blue regions of the spectrum. Optical smoothness, figuring, and overall performance are consistent, with each lens bearing a unique serial number tied to the glass batch and responsible optician. Operating at F7, this telescope delivers optimal performance for both visual observation and imaging, featuring a sufficiently flat field for wide field eyepieces or medium-sized camera sensors. An optional 0.8x focal reducer/field flattener (Planostar V3) is available for a faster F5.6 focal ratio, with recommended spacing of 63mm from the rear lens centre to the sensor surface.

Similar to most refractors, this telescope provides a brighter, higher-contrast image at the eyepiece compared to a reflecting telescope of the same aperture, owing to the absence of a secondary mirror central obstruction.

For astro imaging, the Starwave 80ED optical design delivers optimal performance in a dual imaging and visual telescope, surpassing achromatic telescopes with the same focal length in colour correction.

The tube rings feature the standard M6 hole pattern, compatible with various hardware mounting systems, including Altair Starwave and TMS ranges, and include a Vixen-style dovetail bar.

To utilise this high-quality telescope, a mount, eyepieces, and a star diagonal are essential. Consider adding a finder scope or Red Dot Finder (RDF) for quick and easy object location. For a more accurate optical finder, the Altair 60mm RACI or Starwave 50mm Straight-through finder scopes are recommended, both of which can be used for auto-guiding with the Altair GPCAM for long exposure imaging.

The aluminium tube achieves thermal equilibrium rapidly, with its metal construction facilitating efficient heat conduction to the front optics, a crucial factor for imaging purposes.
