The NOVAStar 0.6x Reducer/Flattener is designed for ED doublet APO refractor telescopes, including models such as the NOVAStar Emerald ED80D and NOVAStar Emperor ED110D, while remaining compatible with a wide range of doublet ED APO refractors.

This optical accessory corrects field curvature to eliminate elongated stars at the edge of the image, producing sharp, well-corrected stars across the frame. At the same time, it reduces the effective focal length of the telescope by 0.6×, increasing the field of view and improving imaging speed.

In optical systems, “speed” refers to the focal ratio. A smaller focal ratio results in a faster system, meaning shorter exposure times are required to achieve the same image brightness. For example, an f/4 system gathers light faster than an f/8 system.

When used with compatible telescopes:

NOVAStar Emerald ED80D (f/6.25) becomes approximately f/3.75
NOVAStar Emperor ED110D (f/6) becomes approximately f/3.6

Fast optical systems require precise back focus spacing and minimal sensor tilt for optimal performance.

Using the same eyepiece or imaging sensor, the reducer increases field of view, lowers magnification, and enables shorter exposure times for astrophotography.

The reducer/flattener is ideal for DSLR, CCD, and CMOS astrophotography cameras, delivering pinpoint stars across sensors up to APS-C size. Correct field correction requires 55mm back focus measured from the base of the M48 thread.

The unit features a 2" nosepiece, making it compatible with standard 2" (50.8mm) focusers, diagonals, and prisms. A female M48 thread on the nosepiece allows installation of standard 2" filters such as light pollution or dual-band filters.

Use with DSLR cameras

An M48 camera T-ring specific to your camera brand is required. For example, a Canon EOS M48 T-ring (11mm thickness) combined with the Canon 44mm flange distance achieves the required 55mm back focus.

Use with CMOS cameras

Many CMOS cameras, such as ZWO models with a 17.5mm back focus, require additional spacers or adapters (often supplied with cooled cameras or available separately).
