The NOVAStar 0.6x Reducer/Flattener for ED doublets is designed for ED APO telescopes such as the NOVAStar Emerald ED80D and NOVAStar Emperor ED110D, and is compatible with a wide range of doublet ED APO refractors. It corrects field curvature to eliminate elongated stars at the edges of the field while reducing the effective focal length of the telescope, increasing both the field of view and imaging speed.

For those new to astrophotography: the “speed” of a telescope refers to its focal ratio. A smaller number indicates a faster system. For example, an f/4 system gathers light faster than an f/8 system, meaning shorter exposure times are needed to achieve the same image brightness.

 

Using this reducer/flattener with your telescope:

  • NOVAStar Emerald ED80D (f/6.25) → becomes approximately f/3.75
  • NOVAStar Emperor ED110D (f/6) → becomes approximately f/3.6

 

Faster systems are more sensitive to precise back focus and require minimal sensor tilt for optimal performance. Using the same eyepiece or imaging sensor, the reducer increases your field of view, decreases magnification, and allows for shorter exposure times.

This accessory is ideal for DSLR, CCD, and CMOS astrophotography cameras, providing pinpoint stars across sensors up to APS-C size. For correct field correction, a 55mm back focus from the base of the T-thread (M42×0.75) is required.

It features a 2" nosepiece, compatible with 2" (50.8mm) focusers, diagonals, and prisms. The nosepiece includes a female M48 thread for adding standard 2" filters, including light pollution or dual-band filters.

 

Use with DSLR cameras

A camera-specific T-ring is required. For example, a Canon EOS M42 T-ring (11mm thickness) plus the Canon 44mm flange distance achieves the required 55mm back focus.

 

Use with CMOS cameras

Many ZWO CMOS cameras have a back focal distance of 17.5mm. Additional adapters are included with cooled ZWO cameras, or can be purchased separately for non-cooled models.
